Web Design ~

Web Design is based on your expected outcome goals.

Web designers will take into consideration all the variables and design ideas you can introduce to them, to delivery you a quality product online.

   KISS - STANDARDS - & What the !! -

KISS (yep you've heard it before, 'keep it seriously simple' or 'keep it simple stupid')
Remember various designers may have subjective opinions based on their experience, and that any one opinion may differ from the next. The idea is not to establish what is right or wrong, but to try to lay down some basics. Firstly think about each part or page and ask yourself "is this really necessary, does it serve a purpose?"  Use tools to enhance not overdo, instead of adding things in because they look cool, ensure it adds overall value...

Try to avoid the overdone, these might include:

  • popups
  • page counters
  • javascript scrolling text
  • excessive animated GIF's
  • under construction signs
  • continuous transitions
  • ugly fruit salad (way too many colors in the mix)
  • too much flash loading and slowing the pages

There are some absolutely brilliant sites on the internet, print a few favorites and list what you like about them, the list should give you a good insight into just where your new website design may start and is headed...

HTML standards - Browsers - Screen Resolutions
Where to start? Everyone is using a browser with a screen resolution that is effected by the html standards your site is based on. Most web work is still designed around the 800x600 resolution it may look great in Internet Explorer but in Netscape some one reading on a widescreen notebook computer may need binoculars.
Don't assume everyone on the net has all the latest updated browsers and computers, the website needs to be designed for general broad spectrum use, and you may think it is a little restrictive, but your audience will appreciate it.
Try to consider the myriad of browsers, resolutions, standards, graphics, add-ins, computer speeds, internet connection speeds etc, you can't please everyone but al least try to please the majority...

Novelty items that slow page loading or require add-ins will drive away users, their adware or virus software may pick it up and prevent it loading. The web is a universe of people with great ideas, some maybe practical for your purpose others may not be, consider what you want to achieve and look at the varying tools or methods of achieving your target results.

What the? - Get straight to the point - & freshen it up a bit
Your first page needs to explain your intention to the world, 5 minutes of menu navigation will have your visitors going elsewhere, short attention span or not. Too many graphic distractions or particularly overuse of advertising banners, or colors draws your visitors attention away from their original purpose of the visit.
It's also good practice to keep your site fresh, regularly update it, or revise it, maybe add some of the original design ideas you may have left out. keep it growing and keep it alive. Try to show aesthetically logical layout and design. Don't rush to get it live, let it grow with your changes and new ideas...
